ResearchWhat is a Radio Drama? A dramatised broadcast usually on the radio relying entirely on the audio medium, using no visuals to tell it's plot a radio drama leans on it's dialogue performances, music and sound effects depending on the listener to imagine the characters and story. Below is an example of an Audio Drama... To make a Radio Drama: Looking at examples of radio dramas we noted down some properties that radio dramas use to work well...
Project Brief:
Our Radio Drama In a group with Joe and Jeremy we all had to some research on some Cumbrian myths to use as a subject, Jeremy brought up a tale of a young woman called Emma to supposedly fell from Aira Force whle waiting for her husband who had been away on the crusades. Writing the Script: Jeremy wrote a first draft of script that had the Emma character meeting her husband Roger at the top of the waterfall he reveals he had been with another woman away in the crusades then they fight but during the struggle Emma falls into the waterfall perishing. Years later in the present day two scool characters would be by the waterfalls and one would get killed off by the ghost of Emma from the waters for an ending of horror. The first draft set up a good basis of backstory for the character and a good ending for a reveal of for the ghost at the end but when reading through it the dialouge didn't feel natural nor did the character choices as Roger showed no remorse to his wife who he supposedly loved and if he were a knight I'd have expected him to be little more apologetic and remorseful at his serious loss of honour, I also felt we needed a bit more setup for Emma to become a vengeful spirit so I had her resort to madness when Roger breaks the terrible news resulting her in attacking Roger which resulted in the stuggle that led to her fall. The modern day segment was changed too as I thought the ghost of Emma would need a reason to go seeking out revenge on average normal day people, so I came up with the simple set up of a young example goingto the falls on little hike but the one had cheated on the other but before they can confess the ghost emerges from the waterfalls and kills them for being unfaithful much like Roger was to Emma. It was agreed upon that these changes did improve the script but however it still needed polishng up so all three of us went throught changing typos and decinding which sounds we needed to record and collect. Recording Sounds and Dialogue: The video above shows a montage of the recording our foley with ADR twards the end which we did on a diffrent day. In order to collect the things we needed for the foley Jeremy and I went into town and bought a jug in order to collect the sounds of runnig water which we would later edit for a waterfall and river sound effect. On the way back we would collect leaves, stones and twigs to break and stand on in order create the foley we needed for footsteps and breaking bones for the fall sounds. A lack of kit meant we had to record on the lappel microphones which didn't give us the ideal sounds we were hoping for however, there wasn't rtoo much we could do without waiting for another group to finish. So we just had to go with it in order to meet the deadline. The day we recorded the dialogue we had lot the edted script so we had to improvise some of the imporvments and so we couldn't get the dialouge we completely wanted but it wasn't too bad since what he had was good enough. We had no time to gather actors so we just used Kieran, Hanna and Ethan from one of the other groups who were also recording on that day. Editing: Jeremy and I edited the project together and the final productis below, we decided to edit on Adobe Premier Pro as Jeremy knew this software better and we would find it easier and quicker to edit on than Final Cut Pro, which would be necessary as we were facing a next day deadline. We followed the script line by line to create the dialogue, and edited to them having character dialogue put onto left or right speakers depending on which charcters faded their dialouge in order to reate distance between them. We then went back and added the foley and edited them to make them fade in loudly when there was no dialogue ar the beginning and then faded it quiter later in ordeer to not ove rshaow the dialogue when the story takes form. We then added music from the stock site Incompetech.com by Kevin Mcleod to create different moods for the varying parts of the story. Evaluation:
I think because of our rapidly speeding deadline we hhad to rush this project's editing and sond recording stages and we didn't hav time to go bkack and fix up some mistakes as you can see in our recording video we some times held the mic to close to the foley sounds we wer maing epescaially with the screams and in the audio drama you can definitely tell this. I think the project could have done with a bit of narration too as it cn be difficult to tell what is going on the story when there is no dialogue. However there are some redememing qualities to this as some of our sounds do work well in setting up locales in the story and the way we use the music is quite effective and the effects we put on our ghost sounds aso work well. I enjoyed doing this project reasnoably well and I wouldn't be against doing another audio drama again...
