We were tasked with creating an animatic for part of our Unit, we had to base it around a given song, this was the Garth Brooks song 'MAMA loved PAPA"... What is an animatic? An animatic is a preview idea of how a film should look using storyboards adding a soundtrack and simple animations and zooms to give the preview a flow as if it were the finished product. This will help the editors pull together a more coherent edit in the final product as they can use the edit as a reference. Much like a storyboard arrows and notes will be put onto the pictures for the director or whoever else looks at them on production e.g. camera movement or lighting cues. Unlike a storyboard however movement animation will be used to simulate the motion of the final product. Below is an example of an animatic for a short action sequence for an Wicked musical project making use of these techniques also being used ... Basic Ideas for My Animatic:We only had to do sixty seconds of the song so I decided to do about the first sixty seconds from the beginning as I felt it gave the best set up for an animatic and there was a lot I could do. The basic idea was to show the song visually as if it were a camp fire story as told by the singer. Since the song was a Country style song and with the guitar playing solo at the beginning it just made for a nice complimentary visual to have an older man laying a guitar campfire. The song kicks in right after that and at first I was thinking of just showing visuals that visualised the lyrics but I felt that was unimaginative and not very visually interesting so I had the idea to basically show the images I would beofre reflecting the lyrics but the images would be actually created by the flames of the campfire most likely done in animation... Below is the final product... Evaluation:Overall I feel my attempt at an animatic was done pretty well I felt my basic idea of having the images being cast as flames as a really creative way of showing visuals and the editing works well to the beats of the music. My problems with the final product is that it feels rushed in the editing process with the flames in the background just sort of sitting there and I also felt I could have used a bit more animation with the drawings.
